Graphic Design for Enlightening Communication

Wednesday, 11 June 2008, 16:00 EST/20:00 GMT (120 minutes; $29)

The ability to present quantitative information in an effective and compelling manner is not intuitive; it requires visual communication skills that must be learned. Based on his book, Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten, Stephen Few will introduce in this class the best practices of graphic design for effective communication.

Quantitative information—the numbers that measure performance, identify opportunities, and forecast the future—is important to all organizations. Quantitative information is often presented as graphs, but most graphs used by organizations today are poorly designed—often to the point of misinformation. Why? Because almost no one who produces them, including specialists, have been trained in effective graph design.

This presentation will set you squarely on the path of becoming an exception to this norm. Following Few's clear precepts, communicated through examples of what works, what doesn't, and why, you'll begin to learn how to design graphs to present data clearly and drive your message home.

This class will cover:

  1. The current state of data presentation
  2. The two fundamental challenges of data presentation
  3. The differing characteristics and uses of tables and graphs
  4. The seven common quantitative relationships in graphs
  5. Steps for featuring the data and eliminating distractions
