How it works (part 2)

PublicDecisions training is live and interactive. Participants are geographically separated, but connected via the internet and by phone. You'll be able to talk to the entire group and interact in other ways in real time. The instructor can even break the class into small groups for exercises, just like in a "real" classroom.

System Requirements

To participate in a PublicDecisions class or event, you'll need just two things:

1. A computer with internet access connected for the duration of the class.

  • Windows
    • 98 or 2000 with Internet Explorer 6.0+
    • XP with Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, 8.x; Firefox 3.x; Safari 3.x
    • Vista with Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, 8.x; Firefox 3.x; Safari 3.x
  • MAC - Safari 3.x or Firefox 3.x
  • 56K modem (broadband preferred and sometimes required)
  • JavaScript, cookies, and ActiveX enabled/unblocked. Security settings should be set to medium or low.

2. Computer audio or a telephone that can dial the USA (location within the US varies)

  • For computer audio (headset or microphone+speakers), you must first download and install this file. (To verify successful installation, click here.)
  • Landline or cell phone - Within the US, long-distance charges may apply. Overseas participants will normally incur international toll charges.
  • Internet telephone - You may use Skype, in which case SkypeOut charges will apply, or any other internet telephony service.
  • We encourage the use of a duplex or bluetooth headset to avoid neck strain, to keep your hands free for other tasks, and to minimize background noise. Always mute your speakerphone/microphone when not talking.

Time Zones

Our audience is worldwide, so we schedule classes to be accessible whether you're in Louisville or London, Winnipeg or Wollongong.

Class start times are shown in two time zones, Eastern US/Canada (EST or EDT) and Greenwich Mean Time/Universal Time (GMT/UTC). Times are based on a 24-hour clock (e.g., 15:00 means 3:00 pm). It's your responsibility to determine your local time with respect to GMT for the class date. The World Clock Meeting Planner, a free service, may help. Please note that depending on the time of year, GMT is not necessarily the current time in London.

Here's the current time in GMT/UTC:

Email Addresses and Spam Filters

To register and participate in a class or other event, we must be able to communicate with you via email. To avoid problems with spam filters, please add the following domains to the safe senders list in your computer's email program and in any separately hosted spam filter (e.g., Postini). If you're in a corporate or government office, you may need your network administrator's assistance.
